Anti-Doping Policy

The use of performance enhancing drugs in triathlon and multisport is illegal. Whether the use of drugs is intentional or not, policies exist to sanction athletes that are proved to have consumed prohibited substances. Athletes have the responsibility to ensure they are abiding by the Triathlon Australia Anti-Doping policy that aligns with the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority (ASADA) as well as the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA)s policies.

Triathlon Queensland Anti-Doping policy

Triathlon Queensland is a state and territory triathlon association under Triathlon Australia in terms of anti-doping policies. Triathlon Queensland endorses the national associations policies in relation to anti-doping. The TA anti-doping policies are available on the Triathlon Australia website.

The Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority

ASADA is an Australian government organisation established in 2006 with the objective of preserving and protecting sport values through the deterrance and detection of the use of illicit drugs in sport, and enforcement of anti-doping rules. ASADA is legally allowed to investigate suspected anti-doping rule violations, make recommandations on its findings, and present cases against alleged offenders at sport tribunals. You can check that the products you use are in accordance with the anti-doping rules of Triathlon Australia on the anti-doping hotline: 1800 020 506. 7 days, 8AM-8PM AEST.

The World Anti-Doping Agency

Triathlon Australias decisions in terms of drug use in triathlon and multisport must be compliant with the World Anti Doping Code (http://www.wada-ama.org/rtecontent/document/code_v2009_En.pdf), and they must have been approved by the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority (ASADA, www.asada.gov.au).

Athletes are responsible for being aware of their sports anti-doping rules, therefore they should refer to the list of prohibited products published every year by WADA. Click here to see the list.

Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE)

Athletes are allowed to use certain substances or methods that are normally prohibited by WADA provided that they do so for therapeutic purpose. In order to know if you are entitled to a TUE, go to the Australian Sports Drug Medical Advisory Committees website. A therapeutic use exemption form must be filled and sent back to the ASDMAC. You will find all the information on therapeutic use exemptions and the forms to fill in here.

TQ Drug education policy

The use of particular drugs is openly forbidden as it can enhance perofrmance, harm athletes health, and is contrary to the spirit of sport. Triathlon Queensland puts the emphasis on educating athletes so as to encourage the principles of fair-play, to communicate the consequences of taking drugs in terms of sanctions and health, and to promote a clean image of our sport. Triathlon Queensland provides educational sessions on policies related to drug use for athletes, coaches, clubs, as well as team managers and race organisers. Their objective is to reach these audiences and make the policies available to all parties so that each party is aware of its role and responsibilities towards the use of drugs in the sport of triathlon. Triathlon Queensland seeks to promote the sport of triathlon as a clean and enriching sport practise in the respect of fair play and achievement in terms of performance.
